The First Born of the Nigerian Society of Engineers
NIEEE is widely regarded as the pioneer Division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE). From its formation in 1984 to becoming a Chartered Institute in 2023, NIEEE has consistently led the way in professionalizing Electrical and Electronic Engineering in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) can be considered the first born of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) due to its pioneering role in professionalizing the electrical engineering discipline among engineering divisions in Nigeria. The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) was formally established in 1958 as an umbrella body for all engineering disciplines. It was inaugurated on 16th February 1958 in London, United Kingdom, with Mr. G.O Aiwerioba elected as its first President. The formal inauguration in Nigeria took place on 19th January 1959 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In 1984, eminent Electrical and Electronic Engineers led by Engr. Dr. Olusegun Ajayi, FNSE, FNIEEE pioneered the formation of the first professional Division of NSE — the Electrical Division. Dr. Ajayi later became a Past President of NSE and the first Chairman of the Division, which has now evolved into the Institute.
To promote professional competence through the design and development of sustainable Electrical and Electronic Engineering solutions for the benefit of mankind and the environment.
- Capacity Building
- Research & Innovation
- Policy Advocacy
To be the leading and most credible professional institute of first choice for Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Nigeria and beyond.
- Professional Excellence
- Technological Leadership
- National Development
On 12th October 2006, at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), members unanimously voted to rename the Division to “The Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE)”. This was approved by the NSE Council in January 2007, making it the first Institution recognized by NSE.
On 6th December 2012 at the Ilorin Ordinary General Meeting (OGM), Engr. Adekunle Makinde, FNSE, FNIEEE constituted a committee to pursue the chartering of the Institution. The committee members were:
- Engr. Sunday Oguntunde, FNIEEE (Lagos)
- Engr. Friday Ojone Ukwela, MNIEEE (Abuja)
- Engr. Alex N. Akoriegyah, MNIEEE (Benue)
- Engr. Isaac Odeyemi, MNIEEE (Abuja)
- Engr. Abdulahi Tahir, MNIEEE (Abeokuta)
- Engr. Akan Michael, FNIEEE (Lagos)
- Engr. Adeleye Adegboyega, FNIEEE (Lagos)
One key requirement for chartering was registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). Although initially stalled, the process was successfully completed during the tenure of Engr. Emmanuel Akinwole, FNIEEE (Past National Chairman). By 24th September 2018, the certificate was received by Engr. John Funso-Adebayo, FNIEEE, transforming the Institution into the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE).
In 2020, under the leadership of Engr. Kings Adeyemi, FNIEEE, efforts continued toward achieving full charter status. A Bill to establish the Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (CIEEEN) was sponsored by Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar. A Public Hearing was held on 9th December 2021 by the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service.
The process was driven by members of the National Executive Committee, including:
- Engr. Akan Michael, FNIEEE (Past President)
- Felix O. Olu, FNIEEE (President)
- Barnabas Gwaivangmin, FNIEEE
- Felix Adegboye, FNIEEE
- Abdullahi T. Sulaiman, FNIEEE
- Terab Ibn Ali, MNIEEE
- Oto-Obong John Effiong, FNIEEE
- Bayo Olusodo, FNIEEE
- Simeon Isibor, FNIEEE
- Kings Adeyemi, FNIEEE (Immediate Past President)
Following approval by both Chambers of the National Assembly, the Bill was signed into law on 11th April 2023, establishing the Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (CIEEEN) — the first of its kind in Nigeria’s engineering history.
Today, NIEEE has 36 inaugurated Chapters across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria and continues to build professional capacity through initiatives such as the International Conference and Exhibition on Power and Telecommunication (ICEPT), National Webinars, Distinguished Electrical and Electronic Engineering Award Laureate (DEEEAL), and other chapter-driven programs.
- First Division of NSE
- Chartered Institute established in 2023
- 36 Active Chapters Nationwide
- Flagship Programs (ICEPT, DEEEAL, Webinars)
Our Evolutionary Journey
Birth of NSE & Electrical Division
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) was established in 1958. In 1984, led by Engr. Dr. Olusegun Ajayi, FNSE, FNIEEE, the Electrical Division — the first professional Division of NSE — was formed.
Pioneering the Electrical Division
Engr. Dr. Olusegun Ajayi became the first Chairman of the Electrical Division. The Division grew rapidly and laid the foundation for professionalizing Electrical and Electronic Engineering in Nigeria.
Transformation to NIEEE
On 12th October 2006, members voted to rename the Division to “The Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE)”. The name was approved by NSE Council in January 2007.
Incorporation as an Institute
In 2012, a committee was set up to charter the Institution. The journey culminated on 24th September 2018 when NIEEE received its Certificate of Incorporation from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), becoming the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
Chartered Status Achieved
Under the leadership of Engr. Kings Adeyemi, FNIEEE and subsequent executives, the Institute successfully championed the CIEEEN Bill. On 11th April 2023, the Bill was signed into law, establishing the Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (CIEEEN) — the first of its kind in Nigeria’s engineering history.
