NIEEE Code of Ethics
As members of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NIEEE), we commit to the highest standards of professional conduct, integrity, and ethical practice. This Code of Ethics serves as our guiding light in serving humanity through engineering excellence.
Preamble
Engineering is an important and learned profession. The members of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers recognize that their work has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for all people. Therefore, the services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity, and must be dedicated to the protection of public health, safety, and welfare. Engineers must perform under a standard of professional behavior that requires adherence to the highest principles of ethical conduct.
This Code of Ethics establishes the fundamental principles and specific canons of conduct that all members of NIEEE are expected to uphold in their professional practice.
Fundamental Principles
Every member of NIEEE shall uphold and advance the integrity, honor, and dignity of the engineering profession by:
Public Safety First
Using knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare and the protection of public health, safety, and the environment.
Honesty & Integrity
Performing services only in areas of competence and issuing public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.
Professional Excellence
Acting for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees while maintaining professional integrity.
Continuous Learning
Continuing professional development throughout their careers and providing opportunities for professional growth of fellow engineers.
Fair & Equitable
Treating all persons fairly, with dignity and respect, and without discrimination.
Uphold Reputation
Acting in a manner that upholds the honor, reputation, and dignity of the engineering profession.
Canons of Ethics
The following Canons are fundamental ethical requirements that all NIEEE members must follow:
Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public
Engineers shall recognize that the lives, safety, and welfare of the general public are dependent upon engineering judgments, decisions, and practices incorporated into structures, machines, products, processes, and systems. They shall approve only those engineering documents that are safe for public health, welfare, and environmentally sound.
Perform services only in areas of their competence
Engineers shall undertake to perform engineering assignments only when qualified by education or experience in the specific technical field of engineering involved. They shall not affix their signatures to any engineering plan or document dealing with subject matter in which they lack competence.
Issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner
Engineers shall be objective and truthful in professional reports, statements, or testimony. They shall include all relevant and pertinent information in such reports, statements, or testimony, and shall avoid any act that may be construed as concealing or misrepresenting facts.
Act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees
Engineers shall disclose all known or potential conflicts of interest that could influence or appear to influence their judgment or the quality of their services. They shall not accept compensation from more than one party for services on the same project without the consent of all parties.
Maintain professional integrity and avoid deceptive acts
Engineers shall not falsify their qualifications or permit misrepresentation of their professional qualifications. They shall not assist or induce another to falsify or misrepresent their qualifications. They shall not promote their own interest at the expense of the dignity and integrity of the profession.
Continue professional development throughout their careers
Engineers shall maintain their competence through continuous learning and professional development. They shall encourage and support the professional development of fellow engineers and engineering students under their supervision.

Obligations to the Profession
- Uphold the dignity of the engineering profession
- Mentor young and aspiring engineers
- Contribute to professional knowledge and standards
- Report unethical conduct of fellow engineers
- Participate in professional society activities
Enforcement
- Violations may result in disciplinary action
- Ethics Committee reviews all complaints
- Penalties include reprimand, suspension, or expulsion
- Members have right to fair hearing
- Appeals process available to affected members
Compliance
- All members must affirm compliance annually
- New members accept Code upon induction
- Continuing education includes ethics training
- Regular review and updates of the Code
- Adherence required for all professional activities
